“LONG WEEKEND”
Posted by pennyMay 21
I bet you all are ready for a LONG WEEKEND as much as I am. It is Memorial Day Weekend which most everyone considers the “Official” beginning of Summer. I plan to have a “Memorial Day” Post on Monday so you will have to see how much or how little I know about this holiday. I will tell you now that I still need some “history lessons” on all Holidays… ha!
So for Friday, it is NOT a Ballgame night for us this week but we do have Lily’s “Author Night” at School so with that said- we will be having dinner out… I will let you in on a secret- I never-ever cook on Friday night. I don’t think anyone should if you can get by with it..Ha! So I am not sure where we will go but would suggest BBQ since that is probably the “entree” of choice for the ENTIRE Memorial Day weekend. You could always head to Mud Creek Restaurant in Hollywood. If you have not ever been there, get on Hwy. 72 East (like you are going toward Stevenson) and you will see the sign directing you where to turn to go the Mud Creek. Hush Puppies are very, very good!
If I had my guess, we will eat Pizza because this is Lily’s night since we will be “honoring” her as our favorite Author!! ha!
We are not forgetting our MM- she loves choosing the “dessert” places so since she made the Volley Ball Team this week – we will let her have that “honor” and I can tell you right now it will be either Dairy Queen or Five Points Dairy Bar. She is definitely one of our children because we are an “ICE CREAM” family.
As for the rest of the evening- I think everyone needs to rest up for the Holiday Weekend. And while you are resting, why don’t you all ask God for a “rain-free” weekend. I know that probably in July, we will be experiencing a massive drought and need the “precipitation” in the forcast butI really would like to have an entire weekend with no “green, yellow or red” colors on the radar.
Saturday, there are several places you could check out.
Starting with breakfast- you go to what is the most convenient for you because this has got to be a “no stress” weekend. For us that would be the Variety Bake Shop or Hardees. (By the way, did you know that Johnny Drain and Drain Enterprises recently awarded the Franchise of the Year) Congrats!!!
For those Fisherman that will be supporting the Scottsboro Softball Team, you will have limited places for breakfast and we all know from a past post on the “Purse”, that Hardees on Hwy. 72 opens at 4:30 a.m. and Hardees on Broad Street opens at 5:00 a.m. so you know who will be busy early Saturday morning….You got it, Hardees!
This is the weekend that the “Softball Girls” have been preparing for… the Scottsboro Lady Wildcat Diamond Booster Club is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Blazin’ Bass Blowout on Lake Guntersville.
We all know how “HUGE” fishing is in Scottsboro so you know that like most weekends during the spring and summer months- the Hotel Parking Lots will be at capacity.
If you know someone that may be interested, please let them know about it. For more information, you may call David Mason at 599-6814. Also

Another place to be Saturday morning, will be in Woodville, Alabama.
There will be a Memorial Service at Union Cemetary beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Guest Speaker will be Bruce Light. Lunch will follow at the Bob Jones Community Center which is located in Woodville as well. All you will need to bring is yourself and a covered dish.
For those that really have no place to be at a certain time, we all know that on Holiday Weekends- it is a KNOWN FACT that there are ALWAYS “Big Sales” going on at all the stores.
The Toad Stool has ALL of their Summer Clothes 25% off. If you have not been in Greta’s place, you need to go see all of the wonderful items she has in her store. You will have no problem finding something for your “Little One”. PROMISE!!
Goody 2 Shoes has ALL of their swimsuits (Roxy, Lucky, Ralph Lauren and many more) 30% off. It is officially the beginning of the summer and swim suits are a must in the “wardrobe” for the coming days.
Hammer’s also have some great deals- way too many to even name. They have Michael Kors Swimsuits and a variety of other swimsuits for GREAT PRICES!!!
While you are on the square, you must check out the Maples Rug Outlet (which is right down the street from Goody 2 Shoes).
Above and below are just a VERY few of the MANY styles or rugs that they have in the store.
I have had so many people tell me that I was not exaggerating when I said in early post that the RUGS were fabulous and there were so many to choose from. Did I mention the prices? Unbelievable!!!!
For Lunch- you could continue your “BBQ” eating and grab lunch at Tate’s BBQ! Remember what I have said before- “It is not what is on the outside, what matters is what is cooking on the inside”. Love their sandwiches!!!
If you are not in the mood for BBQ and you have some kids that need to release some extra energy- Jack’s Restaurant is celebrating “Customer Appreciation” Day. They will have all sorts of activities for the kids to do. Another deal that you can get that you will not believe….. After or in between all of the “entertainment” that will be happening at Jack’s- you can go inside and have lunch. Hamburgers will be 15 cents and Milkshakes will be 25 cents!!! How could anyone pass those deals up. You can get those CHEAP burgers and shakes between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
If you have not had the opportunity to check out the new and even better Scottsboro Meats on Parks Avenue, you need to take some time to do just that this weekend. Mr. Miller has said that he is going to have LOTS of great meats to choose from to put on the grill. Why is it on Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day- one of the famous meats to grill is RIBS??? They have some really good “rib” specials too.
As for Saturday Night Dinner– I would suggest Triple R BBQ. They have large tables for the “bigger groups” and then if you just want to do take out. You can always just call ahead and swing by their DRIVE UP window and pick up your food. What did we do before Drive-Up windows? If you have not had their Banana Pudding, you must try it. I could eat bowls of their yellow slaw and potato salad too.
By Sunday, you may have almost had your “limit” of BBQ, but I cannot leave out the Lone Star BBQ. My favorite there is the Stuffed Baked Potato with Brisket. I will warn you, this is no normal size baked potato- it is enormous so you may want to go the “sharing” route. Sweet Potato casserole and their desserts are wonderful too.On Sunday Afternoon, there will be special guest at Gorham’s Bluff.
Gorham’s Bluff will be hosting

*Just so you can make plans- There will be Scottsboro’s Memorial Day Ceremony at Collins Elementary School beginning at 10:45 a.m. Laura Spears, who played the Lead Role in Miss Saigon, will be singing. There will be a speaker and a presentation of our Military Branches. The Gold Stars will also be recognized–Moms, Grandmothers, Daughters and Sisters of a fallen comrade in the line of duty. Following the Ceremony, there will be a light lunch at the Veteran’s Home.
I do hope you enjoy your long weekend. Make sure to check my “Purse” tomorrow and Monday. I will do a Memorial Day Post on Monday. I will be taking Sunday off.
