I took the girls to the Scottsboro Public Library to check some books yesterday (yes, I have put my foot down and told them that they have to read a few minutes a day the rest of the summer. Ha!) and  decided that I would look at some old newspapers that were on film.  The box that I chose was from 1961 and I thought the ads were very interesting…..  There were many for laxatives and I am not sure why but maybe those “products” were making their debut as something other than a ‘homemade’ remedy.

Some of the following photos are of some of the interesting ‘finds’ in this edition of the Jackson County Sentinel. By the way, their were 6 pages in this edition and it was  16 cents (or that is what it looks like it reads) for each copy.

This ad was for Piggly Wiggly and was the Tuesday and Wednesday Specials (not sure, why it was just for 2 days). 

Hickory Smoked Chunk Bacon was 49 cents a pound

Fresh Florida Oranges wer 39 cents for a 5 pound bag

It is really hard to believe that you could get these deals in 1961…. That was only 50 years ago.  There was a time when I would have thought that was a VERY LONG time ago but not now that I am 40 years old…..

Then you could get these items during the Tuesday/Wednesday Specials at Piggly Wiggly;

Coca-Cola (6 bottle carton) for 19 cents

Fresh Lean Ground Beef for 39 cents per pound

Plymouth Ice Cream was 49 cents for 1/2 gallon

That same year and in the same newspaper, this ad was in there for reconditioned appliances…. Can you imagine only having to put $5.00 down?

Washers for $39.95

Electric Ranges for $49.95

Refrigerators for $49.95

This makes me laugh because I cannot even imagine paying less than $50.00 for any of these appliances today and that is even for “used” or “reconditioned”…. Like that word.

I just like this photo are wording…. “Christian Youth Day is being planned” (reminds me of Rock the Block event which I will be telling you more about in the coming days).  The words under the photo reads;

“Dr. Morris Peppers, standing, looks on as representatives of the youth council makes plans for the Christian Youth Day events which will take place in March.  Seated (left to right) are Sue Bradford, Vivianne Webb and Mary Ann Harris.”  (I love the hair styles and clothes the ladies are wearing.  I have to wonder if these ‘styles’ will ever come back around?  Seems that most everything else does at some time or another.)
